Thorn of the rose

This is an original oil painting.
Created on 290gsm canvas paper.
The artwork has been varnished and has a thin white border around the edges to make framing easier.
A3 in size ( 29.7 x 42 cm, or 11.7 x 16.5 inches )

I began painting this girl at a time when I felt the world was imposing on my innermost sphere of ideals and beliefs. I wanted to put up some resistance to this advance. I decided to paint a girl with her hands raised up, as if to say "stop".
It occurred to me recently that this is what the thorn does, on the rose bush. Although a thorn may seem a horrid little thing, really what it is doing is protecting the rose. If you don't touch it, it wont hurt you.

It is the same with humans. In the ancient myths of my ancestors there is a god called Thor, or Thunar to the English. He is the god of strength, and protection and defence. This rune I have painted right above the girl, in the eagle is Thurisaz, it is Thor's rune. If you look at it, it is shaped like a thorn, and this is part of its meaning.
Thor protects the realm of the gods, in the stories. Like a thorn protecting a flower. It isn't bad to defend the things that you love, it is noble and valiant, the true role of the warrior. Whoever you are, you have the strength to be guardian of the things you believe in. May you find that hard edge of defiance when you need to.
